First you need to have these tools:
- New light switch
- Screwdriver
- Wire strippers
- Electrical tape
- Voltage tester
Instructions:
Turn off the power to the circuit at the breaker box. This is important to prevent electrical shock.
Remove the old light switch plate. This is usually done by unscrewing two screws.
Unscrew the old light switch and pull it out of the electrical box. Be careful not to touch the exposed wires.
Use wire strippers to strip about 1/2 inch of insulation off the ends of the wires. Be careful not to cut the wires.
Connect the black wire to the black terminal on the new light switch. Connect the white wire to the white terminal. If there is a green ground wire, connect it to the green terminal on the new light switch.
Tuck the wires into the electrical box and screw the new light switch into place.
Attach the new light switch plate and turn on the power at the breaker box.
Test the new light switch by turning it on and off.
Tips:
If you are not sure which wire is which, you can use a voltage tester to identify them.
Be careful not to overtighten the screws on the light switch, as this can damage the wires.
If you are unsure about how to install a light switch, it is always best to consult a qualified electrician.
